After Principal Tonya King denied junior Jim Stack’s request to grow out his hair for charity, Stack wrote a letter to the school board requesting permission. The board will vote on this request Monday.

“Had I approved Jim’s request, then I would have students everyday asking if they also could break the dress code.” Principal Tonya King said. “We have rules for a reason, and we just can’t go breaking them anytime we want.”

The school dress code states that male students hair must be shorter than collar length and and of a natural color. King said that instead of breaking the dress code, she would be more than willing to help with a fundraiser.

“Anyone can donate money, but it takes time and dedication to grow your hair and donate it”, Stack said.

The non-profit organization, Locks of Love, receives about 200 requests a month from families that cannot afford wigs and every month they have to turn down about 150 of those requests.

“We desperately need human hair for our wigs”, President of Locks of Love Gisel Roco said, “We refer the parents to other organizations, but I wish we didn’t have to.”

While on the phone with Roco, Stack was told that the best way to help would be to grow out his hair and donate it. To do this Stack has to grow out his hair to at least 10 inches of length which will take him between 12 to 18 months to grow.

“I hope the school board understands.” Stack said. “I won’t be hurting anyone when my hair gets longer. I even agreed to tuck it into my shirt so that it won’t be noticeable.”

School Board President Bill Valdez stated that the letter was well written, however he refused to comment on the situation.

“We will discuss it at the board meeting next week.” Valdez said.
